Amazon FBA (Fulfilment by Amazon) charges sellers three main fees that collectively take 30–45% of a typical sale. Understanding each fee is essential before sending inventory to Amazon's warehouses:
| Category | Referral Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Most Categories | 15% | Home, Kitchen, Toys, Books, Sports, Office, etc. |
| Electronics | 8% | Consumer electronics, computers, cameras |
| Clothing & Accessories | 17% | Apparel, handbags, sunglasses |
| Jewellery | 20% | Up to $250; 5% on portion above $250 |
| Automotive | 12% | Parts, accessories, tools |
| Grocery | 8–15% | 8% for items ≤$15; 15% above $15 |
| Health & Personal Care | 8–15% | 8% for items ≤$10; 15% above $10 |
Rates shown are for the US marketplace as of 2026. Amazon updates fees annually — always verify against Amazon's official fee schedule.
For a typical $25 product in the "Home & Kitchen" category weighing 12 oz (large standard size): referral fee $3.75 (15%) + FBA fulfilment fee ~$4.78 + storage ~$0.09 = $8.62 in Amazon fees. That is roughly 34.5% of the selling price. Add your product cost, and you can see why calculating fees before listing is critical. Our calculator above does this maths instantly for any product.
Amazon's FBA fulfilment fee depends on two factors: size tier and shipping weight. Products are classified into size tiers based on their dimensions and weight:
The single biggest lever to reduce FBA fees is product packaging. Reducing your packaging dimensions by even half an inch can drop you into a lower size tier and save $1–2 per unit.
With FBA, Amazon handles storage, picking, packing, shipping, and returns. You pay fulfilment and storage fees but earn the Prime badge, which typically increases conversion rates by 20–30%. With FBM (Fulfilled by Merchant), you handle shipping yourself — no fulfilment or storage fees, but no Prime badge either (unless you qualify for Seller Fulfilled Prime).
For most sellers, FBA makes sense when the higher conversion rate from Prime offsets the additional fees. Use this calculator to compare your FBA costs against your own shipping costs to find the breakeven point.
If you sell on Amazon alongside other marketplaces like Shopee, Lazada, or TikTok Shop, managing inventory across all channels becomes the real challenge. Tools like OneCart sync your stock levels in real time across Amazon and 12+ other platforms, preventing overselling when an FBA unit sells on one channel but your other listings haven't updated yet.
Yes, but margins are tighter than ever. The average Amazon FBA seller sees 15–25% net margins after all fees. The key is product selection — choose items with enough margin to absorb the 30–45% in Amazon fees while still being price-competitive. Use this calculator to verify profitability before committing to inventory.
Your break-even selling price is: (Product Cost + FBA Fulfilment Fee + Storage Fee) ÷ (1 − Referral Fee %). For example, if your product costs $6, FBA fee is $4.78, and storage is $0.09: ($6 + $4.78 + $0.09) ÷ (1 − 0.15) = $12.79 break-even price. Anything above that is profit.
Amazon refunds the referral fee when a customer returns an item, but charges a return processing fee for certain categories (Clothing, Shoes, Jewellery, etc.). The return processing fee equals the original fulfilment fee. For other categories, there is no return processing fee, but you still lose the outbound shipping cost built into the FBA fee.
Most experienced sellers target a minimum 30% gross margin (selling price minus product cost and all Amazon fees) to leave room for advertising, returns, and unexpected costs. If your calculator result shows less than 20% margin, reconsider the product or find a way to reduce costs.
